Mother didn’t approve

Zohra was really nervous as she spoke to her best friend Hannah. Her mother never did like it when she talked to her. She didn’t quite understand why though. Hannah was her best friend-her only friend infact.

It had been only a year since she came here from Afghanistan, it was a little too much to handle really. Making friends was especially hard for her when she spoke ‘funny’ around others and well was different from them. Hannah was very kind to her though, she talked to her and welcomed her into her house with open arms. Yet, mother didn’t approve.

Mother always talked of how this is just temporary, they will go back to their home soon. She talked of the beautiful fields, the hills and how fun it would be once they return. Initially, Zohra believed her ardently, but as time went by she felt her faith diminishing. She wanted to accept her fate and start here again, with Hannah and more like her. Yet, mother didn’t approve.

Maybe it was because, how Hannah didn’t wear hijab like a good girl should. Or how she didn’t pray like Zohra did. Zohra always wondered. Mother always ignored Hannah when she saw them in a room playing. She never spoke to her, never even addressed her directly. It was unsettling to Zohra. She’d tried asking mother why she blatantly ignored Hannah but was fearful of the consequences. Mother had always been her support, she adored all her friends back in Afghanistan. Hannah was a nice girl too. Yet, mother didn’t approve.

She still remembers the day it all started-vividly. Zohra was on her way home from school when the school bus suddenly exploded. Before, she could even comprehend what happened everything was black. When she finally woke up next, her whole life had been turned upside down. She was in a different country, in a hospital gown, her face was heavily disfigured and one of her legs had been damaged so much, it had to be amputated. She couldn’t believe anything that was happening to her.

She was terrified. She couldn’t understand a thing these foreigners spoke. She eventually realized that she was the foreigner here in a strange land far away from home. Apparently, Zohra had been lucky to survive the attack but needed immediate medical help. Some NGO, she couldn’t quite grasp the name, flew her here for further treatment and rehabilitation.

It was all too overwhelming; she wanted her mother. She wanted to go back to the way everything was before all of this. A few days in the hospital, a woman promised she would find her mother. A few days later she still hadn’t heard from her when she saw her mother by her side sitting on the chair. She couldn’t believe herself she had gotten at least her mother back.

Mother disapproved of a lot of things, her talking to anyone about her past and now Hannah. Despite feeling guilty about disregarding her mother’s instructions, she loved playing and reading with Hannah. The more she started liking this place and making new friends, the more aggressive mother had become. Now it had come to the point where she would get scars on a weekly basis. Simply, because mother didn’t approve.

The doctors around her grew concerned. They would keep monitoring her and for some reason didn’t believe anything when she talked about her mother. Zohra’s recent visit to the counselor were the most confusing. Why wouldn’t it be? That lady spoke outrageous things!

She said her mother didn’t exist. She said her mother already passed away in Afghanistan. She said what she presumed to be her mother was just a figment of her imagination. She said that Zohra was using her imagination to deal with all the pain. She said her mother never did hurt her, she was hurting her herself. She- This was just too much for her. What she said couldn’t be true at all! How could it? When mother was standing just beside the woman glaring at her!

It just didn’t make any sense. Surely, they wanted to separate her from mother somehow! As the lady droned on and on, her mother shushed her to keep quiet. She couldn’t make a scene here now. Mother surely didn’t approve.

As the lady finished with her talking, Zohra promised to take the prescribed pills. Zohra also promised her that she would talk to someone the next time she sees mother. She didn’t like faking promises but she couldn’t just tell her that mother was standing just beside her now, could she? Finally, the lady buzzed for help and a nurse helped her out to Hannah and her mom.

Hannah helped her into the car and her mother started driving back to their place. She knew she couldn’t take the pills, mother wouldn’t approve. She also felt really guilty fake promising Hannah’s mum that she would. She had been nothing but loving and caring to her since day one. At times, she really wanted to hug her and return her affection but she knew she couldn’t. Because just like with Hannah; Mother didn’t approve.

This was a relatively difficult piece to write and it was coming really long so I had cut it short. Anywho, thanks for reading, would love to hear feedback from you. Don’t forget to share though!!

Battle of the sexes: not as fair as you think!

It’s rather unfortunate how almost half the world’s population is suppressed and oppressed by the other half.Gender inequality is sadly amongst the few things that is global and affects all – the rich and the poor. It isn’t only a third world problem or merely a first world inconvenience, it is an omnipresent issue that needs to be addressed!

Often, the misogyny and sexism is so utterly common that we as a society seem to have difficulty acknowledging it. It is so deep rooted in the society that when it is questioned, it causes an uproar! Yes, we might have made a little progress but it certainly is far less than what you might have actually anticipated.

Often, gender equality is overlooked or misunderstood because of senseless and baseless arguments. Here are some of the most shocking facts that prove why it needs to be addressed asap!

  • 60% of the world’s chronically hungry are women and girls.
  • 2/3 of all the children denied education are girls which leads to the current 75% of 876 million illiterates in the whole world. In India, female literacy is at a staggering 65.46% as opposed to the male literacy of 82.14%
  • It is a well known fact that women around the globe spend twice as many hours doing unpaid labours than men.
  • Despite being almost half the population, they hold only 21% of the world’s parliamentary seats and only 8% of the world’s cabinet ministers are women!
  • Despite the UN’s efforts only 46 countries have been able to meet the target of 30% female decision makers. Do you think this is only because women are just incapable of leadership?
  • Women only earn 60-70% of men’s wages for the exact same work. The major reason for that is their gender. Is this in any way justified?
  • Only 6 out of 187 countries give equal work rights to both the sexes. They are Belgium, Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxemburg and Sweden.

I admit not all women might capable of leadership roles but don’t you think these numbers are alarming? Why has it come to this? The answer is the continual oppression of them that has been going on for more than a millennia. Sexism or the discrimination against a particular sex has been going on for as long as the human civilization. For people who think sexism isn’t prevalent even after reading the above facts, here are some more:

  • Female infanticide has led to around 63 million girls missing in India!
  • Societal thinking of valuing men over women has led people to keep ‘trying’ until they have a boy. Many resort to female infanticide to not bear the burden of an unwanted child. The others have contributed to around 21 million girls who are notionally unwanted in India and hence the victims of serious oppressions.
  • 1/3 women around the world are likely to be victims of gender based violence. Gender based violence is one of the biggest causes of death and injury to women worldwide causing more deaths than cancer, malaria and even war!
  • In New Zealand 20% of the women are physically abused and 1 in 5 women are raped in their lifetime. In Samoa and Fiji, the percentage increases to a terrifying 41% and 46% respectively.
  • Then there are countries like India and Singapore where marital rape is still legal!
  • Around 46 countries do no even acknowledge domestic violence and have no laws against it.
  • In some countries like Egypt and Syria, honour killings are justified and aren’t even treated as murders and the perpetrators receive as less as 2 years for them.
  • There are 18 countries around the world like Cameroon, in which men can prohibit their wives from working.
  • Adding to it, there are 17 countries which limit when and how women can travel outside their houses. Some require a male escort as a compulsion in other countries like Yemen a woman must have her husband’s permission to leave her house.
  • Countries like Iran treat their women as secondary citizens by having to provide two female testimonies for each male testimony.
  • Malta’s law allow a man to kidnap a woman and marry her. The woman hence effectively has no say in it.
  • Around 39 countries have laws that differentiate the way a daughter and son inherit property. The most shocking is the case of Chile, Tunisia and the UK wherein a man inherits twice as much as a woman.
  • Almost 300,000 women died in 2013 due to preventable pregnancy and childbirth complications.
  • This mortality is due to the striking number of child brides. Everyday, 33,000 underaged girls are married off which breaks down to 1 child bride every 2 second!
  • According to the World Economic Forum’s latest report; at our current rate, it will take a whopping 108 years to close the gender gap!

If you still disregard this issue of gender inequality, then you really are just being blatantly ignorant of the facts. We need to think over and work towards abolishing this evil from its roots. Our current pace is definitely quite futile, hence we need to spread awareness and work towards improving it.

I aimed to compile verified facts and numbers on the issue so that the actual seriousness becomes obvious to anyone who reads this. Do share this in order to create more awareness!

Time To Sleep

Coming to think of it, it was really silly how she ended up here clicking photos of Mr. Radison’s apartment.

When she moved to this tiny suburb a month ago, it was a pretty big change for her. Shelby, her mother was recently divorced and too busy juggling multiple jobs to help her get accustomed. Lily had to make friends on her own now. How she couldn’t wait to be an adult! Adults could do whatever they wanted. Nobody cared about twelve year olds anyway. Her mum hadn’t asked her opinion about moving in here. This proved nobody cared!

Making friends was a little difficult when the neighbourhood kids silently stand in the distance and judge you. It annoyed her. There was little she could do to change that though. A few more friendless days later, she got an idea. She could have a party! Her mother was hardly home, her house was in the very corner of the street. There was only one other house next to it. And Mr. Radison was hardly ever home either.

It was at this party that everything started. Sipping through the coke, Melanie asked, “So, how is it living beside the Horrendous Horton?” “The who?”, she inquired. “Oh, Mr. Radison silly! Your creepy neighbour”, replied Melanie. Lily didn’t think of Mr. Radison as creepy. He even greeted her yesterday while driving out to work! How could such a friendly man be creepy! The others didn’t agree though. They had built up various non-sensical myths around him. They believed he was absolutely nuts! She realized it was the classic Boo Radley scenario. For the sake of winning over her new friends, she proposed an idea.

The idea was very simple and very illegal. She would wait for Mr. Radison to get to work and enter his house through the backdoor. She would click a few pictures and bring them back to the girls as proof that Mr. Radison wasn’t really so horrendous. Boo Radley did nothing but help Scout and Jem. Mr. Radison was a nice person, just misunderstood like Boo Radley was.

She would clear his name just like Scout did and in turn gain more friends! A fool-proof plan! The girls didn’t think so. They worried it was dangerous and advised her to not go forth with the plan. They didn’t want anything to do with him. She promised them not to go, but did so with her fingers crossed behind her back. She would show them that she was right.

She decided to go forth with her plan today after meticulous spying on Mr. Radison’s whereabouts for almost a week.  She knew he would be back by 6 in the evening and she would be long gone by then. Lily just needed 15 minutes-20 at most. Getting in was simple, and here she was braving her way and clicking pictures of Horrendous Horton’s living room!

She made her way towards the stairs when the basement door caught her eye. Giving little thought to it, she went into the basement. Her feet thudded against the wooden stairs and the cold air somehow felt very pungent. This was not why she froze though! She hadn’t expected to hear a shriek that rattled her. She rushed towards the sound.

There, on the darkest corner of the basement was a woman, with all of her limbs tied. She looked ragged and starving. She was lying on the cold hard ground half clothed surrounded by half-finished plates and other random things laden hap-hazardly. The sight in front of her chilled her to the bones.

The woman started sobbing,’’ Please help me, call the police. Please, you don’t have much time. Please just call the police!!”  This brought Lily out of her shock, she hurried towards the lady and started untying her. “No, no! Just call the police! Fast! Tell them to come here. There is no time for this, he is already coming!!”, the lady sobbed. “But I don’t have a phone with me now. Let me take you to my place first and then we can call the police from there”, replied Lily furiously tugging away at her constraints. The woman still insisted quite urgently that she go away and call the cops first! Lily was confused but complied. She ran up the stairs and opened the basement door. Before she realized what had happened, it all turned black.

Horton hit her right on the temple with a baseball bat. She was completely knocked out. Him waiting quietly for her to get up here had worked well. Setting up cameras around his house was a great idea too. Dragging her body down the basement, he looked maliciously at Sarah. Sarah pleaded,” Please let the poor girl go. She might not even remember anything; she hasn’t done anything wrong. Please don’t kill her! She is just a child!”

Horton chuckled, “My darling Sarah! You know I can’t risk anyone finding you. You are all I have and they will take you away! Lily was a good girl but sadly her time has come. It is her time to sleep. She has to go to sleep. When she wakes up in heaven, I am sure she will understand. I had no other choice. I have no other choice.”

Despite Sarah’s constant pleading she knew that this little girl was doomed. This monster hadn’t let go of her for five years and wasn’t about to start now. She felt so helpless about her situation about the little girl, yet there was little she could do. She hated- no loathed absolutely everything about this situation! Yet there was nothing she could do except regret ever trying to give directions to a stranger. She could do nothing now.

He came down with an axe to finish the deed- in front of her! He wanted her to look, she couldn’t. How could she! She closed her eyes as tight as she could, he would not have it though. He forced her to look as he started up his process, whistling and singing as he axed. He decapitated the girl first, put the head in a jar. He would bury it in his basement. The rest was easy, albeit a little messy. Chopping up her limbs and her body to pieces, he collected them and wrapped them in individual pieces to be buried in different parts of his backyard. The deed was done. Her sense of morose emptiness could not be replaced. She could not help but dearly hope for her ‘time to sleep’ to come soon.

So, here is another one. This one is a bit longer and I hope it was worth your while!

The Prisoner

The boots made little noise as they touched the snow-covered ground. The fresh dewy snow didn’t make a thick layer on the ground quite yet, but it was enough to leave his boot-prints for them to catch. If he continued on the roads, it would be quite easy to track him. As it is, he had been running long enough now- almost 4 straight miles. He had to stop and think of a better path. With fear still coursing through his veins, he paused to catch his breath.

The moon shimmered in the barren night-sky, half peeking through the few dark clouds shadowing it. The trees in front of him stood tall and proud almost as if mocking him. He looked around and realized both sides of the roads were covered with lush canopies so thick that they hardly let snow down on the ground. He tried to get his bearings straight and analyse which direction to go next. Did it really matter though? He shrugged and jumped right; into the ruddy ground of the woods.

Running in the woods was easier than the snow-covered roads. He was faster here, albeit a little noisier. It didn’t matter though. He was so far out in the woods now, there was little chance of someone waking up from the noises. The pitch darkness that had swallowed him when he entered the woods seemed to be unending. The farther he went, the darker it got. Still, he ran. It wasn’t the darkness that scared him. It was the noises in his head. He was trying his hardest to not focus on the noises on them. The rustle of the leaves, the sound of his boots hitting the ground and the occasional hooting of the owl somewhere around him. He urged himself to focus on these.

He had to pause yet again to catch his breath and to his left, saw darkness that was even more opaque. He had gotten accustomed to the night around him, but this seemed more denser than usual. Stupidly, he reached closer to investigate. With anticipation and anxiousness cloaking him, he walked closer, slowly until he realized it was just a tiny cave. He felt foolish and relieved simultaneously. After inspecting the tiny cave and finding it safe enough, he decided to sleep in for the remainder of the night. He would require all his strength tomorrow. He sat down resting his back on the cave wall and fished his pocket for the cigarette pack he had stolen earlier. There were only three left, the matches weren’t in good number either. Still, he didn’t just crave a smoke now, he needed it.

As he took a long drag in, he could feel the nicotine calming his mind and the soothing smoke filling his lungs. Resting his hands on his knees, he realized just how quiet it was in this little place. It didn’t help. It just made the voices in his head clearer. He could not take it anymore. He slumped his head on his hands and before he knew it, he was crying- bawling really. He was crying so hard his vision had blurred. With tears running through his flustered cheeks he remembered. He remembered and he regretted. But what use was this lamenting now anyway? What happened- what he had done; couldn’t be undone. There was nothing he could do except regret. And boy did he regret.

Regret- it engulfed him; it coiled around him slowly like a snake crushing him with its power. He never realized how strong the feeling of regret was until now when it was all he could feel. It was getting harder to breathe now, but he knew there was no cure for regret. He would just have to exist with this heaviness strangling his heart, slowly killing his soul within. He would just have to live with it.

This is just a short blurb that I had in mind. Do share your feedback for the same. Thanks for reading!

The Happily Ever After

I loved fairy tales when I was younger. I absolutely treasured the stories of Cinderella, of Aurora, of Snow White amongst others. I loved the idea of a prince charming coming to my rescue, the idea of a fairy godmother to magically turn me beautiful- heck even talking animals with whom I could sing and dance. Then reality came crashing down.

Reality is unfortunately not black and white but just a jumbled mass of grey. People are not good like Aurora and evil like Maleficent but just a varying combinations of those. Playing the damsel in distress would only make you weaker and you will perish even quicker. I realized there is no prince charming who is gonna save you. There is no fairy godmother who could make you look prettier. Also, sadly there is no talking animals to lighten up your mood!

The thing is; the only person who is gonna save you is YOU. You are the one who can make you feel prettier. You are the one who can save yourself from your own destruction. You have the power to make yourself truly happy. You are your own saviour. It’s you- always YOU. Not some stupid prince charming and sure as hell not some freakin’ fairy god mother.

When you finally realize this, hopefully it’s not too late. Hopefully, you haven’t lost the entirety of yourself trying to conform to the unattainable society standards. Hopefully, your soul hasn’t been broken into pieces so small that they cannot even be picked up. Hopefully there is still time for you to heal, to save yourself.
